our minds to shut out day-to-day worries, to focus on one step at a time thus opening
our minds to those thoughts and ideas that might otherwise elude us. Without exception, the women in this book, including the author, found inspiration for their creativity
in long-distance walking escapes. A 20-30 km hike while physically exhausting, can
also be empowering and mentally stimulating.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span face=""Verdana",sans-serif" lang="EN-CA">Abbs points out near the start of the
book that we should never go back. This is something I discovered as a child,
rotating between homes and countries every 6 months or so. Each time I would go
back, I would find everything had changed and I would need to start again…and
again…and again. Abbs tried to revisit her familiar Welsh cwm or valley where
she and her family walked in her childhood and was as disappointed as my childish self was to find
it irreparably changed. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span face=""Verdana",sans-serif" lang="EN-CA">We can’t go back. We must live each
moment to the fullest and then push on, always looking for new doors to open,
new adventures, new beginnings. Abbs realized that she too was leaving her
past behind, as her children became adults and left the nest.
From these exceptional women, she learned how to empower herself to walk bravely into her
new future. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span face=""Verdana",sans-serif" lang="EN-CA">Windswept</span></b><span face=""Verdana",sans-serif" lang="EN-CA"> was so much more than I
was expecting. Where I eagerly anticipated learning about the experiences of women
who love walking, I found inspiration for myself to move into and cope with a
life that is constantly changing whether I want it to or not. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span face="Verdana, sans-serif">In

Apparently, you need a high-speed connection which, living in the country we don't have so I have no idea how Jonna manages)</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjrAYaOYUl0fak1g9GSdI_P1rWyqIryi2uztOKRUKFDkbx9lpd9KMj1JizerpQWk2mESSFgm5X8O9c7FiQxi_Hcr6g8-Xxu3P3eIRvEnMnfC8kxkomFOShoLHdjH5GxKlLKvwauI0OxsUiDGoUu8mYbdBZO0KyhPGeb2Ipdd9aRIUkz216WcueTATha=s1334" imageanchor="1" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1334" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjrAYaOYUl0fak1g9GSdI_P1rWyqIryi2uztOKRUKFDkbx9lpd9KMj1JizerpQWk2mESSFgm5X8O9c7FiQxi_Hcr6g8-Xxu3P3eIRvEnMnfC8kxkomFOShoLHdjH5GxKlLKvwauI0OxsUiDGoUu8mYbdBZO0KyhPGeb2Ipdd9aRIUkz216WcueTATha=w640-h360" width="640" /></a></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">I'm not suggesting anybody watch a 10-hour video, but you could taste a piece of it and as suggested, use it for meditation or for a sleep aid or even as background "music" for whatever activity you're engaged in. Here are a few photos from my 2018 trek up Offa's Dyke Path, from Chepstow in the south, at the Severn Estuary, 177 miles/285 Km north, with a total elevation gain of 30,000 ft/9100 meters, to Prestatyn on the Irish Sea.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">These particular photos were taken at Castell Dinas Bran, the remains of a medieval castle and, before that, an iron age fort near Llangollen in Denbighshire. I almost didn't go up there because there was a steep climb and it had already been a long day in which we had seen Chirk Castle and walked across the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Like a horse heading for the barn, I was </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">just </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">looking forward to getting to my B and B. The Dutch couple who befriended me urged me on and with the clearing weather and views so spectacular, it turned out to be my favourite place along the entire route. text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">This debut novel by screenwriter, Jenny Lecoat, is set in the place of her birth, Jersey, one of the small Channel Islands just 14 miles off the coast of Brittany in France. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">The World War 2 story is a retelling of actual events. The main character, Hedy, has survived the Anschluss in her native Austria and finds herself working as a mother's helper on Jersey just before the island is invaded and annexed by the German army in 1940. In spite of being Jewish, Hedy is able to find work as a translator for the German authorities, a position that enables her to defy the Germans and aid her community. She ends up in a relationship with a German officer who is then instrumental in her survival. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">I don't know if most people realize the extent of the hardships faced by the Channel Islanders during the German occupation. Personal rights were obliterated overnight, most foodstuffs were requisitioned by the Germans, leaving the locals in a position of near-famine. Radios were seized, electricity was sporadic and fuel for cooking or keeping warm was hard to come by. People became so desperate that they would do almost anything to survive. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Then, when the Allies attacked the French coast during the June 1944 D-day raids, Islanders' hopes of rescue died as they came to realize that they were being passed over. The actual rescue did not arrive until nearly a year later. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Despite the riveting details of all these troubles and hardships (I had to put the book down and walk away a few times) I enjoyed reading <span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>The Girl From the Channel Islands</b> and recommend it to others. </span></span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><br /><b><br /></b></span><p></p>Jean Heyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895278684129111547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-562105087769528944.post-51758811764057831102021-06-08T06:00:00.000-04:002021-06-08T06:00:00.222-04:00Edible and Non-Edible Art #5 and 6<div><span style="font-family: verdana;">A continuation of the food-related art series.</span></div><h3><span style="font-family: verdana;">#5 Prudence Staite, Food is Art</span></h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_D1gFj8u0eeGD6NjPA5qTR4QBDwMkC3rnUbvCUx_3ui7w1JAAF46Ce2_RCZ4Q9jl7rLpg8s-pW3QrzVNdnF2tgujwrZDzLX82AUM1JGvY7Rj3KMbFu6DOgeIAmvXfzGfWFaaMWybxzSE/s237/Prudence+Staite.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="213" data-original-width="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_D1gFj8u0eeGD6NjPA5qTR4QBDwMkC3rnUbvCUx_3ui7w1JAAF46Ce2_RCZ4Q9jl7rLpg8s-pW3QrzVNdnF2tgujwrZDzLX82AUM1JGvY7Rj3KMbFu6DOgeIAmvXfzGfWFaaMWybxzSE/s16000/Prudence+Staite.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><div>Prudence Staite is a UK artist specializing in the sculpture of food materials - chocolate, cheese, fruit and vegetables, even cupcakes. The Festival invites participants to debate, celebrate and reflect as we rethink our relationship with trees and forests. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Here's a video from 2019:</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/OgHtoOVKQek" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Unfortunately, the Festival was cancelled in 2020, so in response, the organizers invited people from around the world to share a 1-minute sound clip to be shared online. Thus was born the "Sounds of the Forest" project whereby people could connect with one another, inspire and be inspired. So far over 750 sound clips have been shared from 70 countries and every continent. They have been listened to more than 1.5 million times. </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Rowan Cannon and Sarah Bird, partners with the National Forest Company in creating the Timber Festival said, </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>We're beyond thrilled with how many recordings have been contributed from forests and woodlands all over the world and the extraordinary level of global engagement. The sounds form an open-source library, to be used by anyone to listen to and create from. They have provided a source of meditation for many and been used as a source of inspiration for art and music for others. </i></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>We are living in a world filled with uncertainty and we believe the natural world offers much reassurance and constancy. Sounds of the Forest has encouraged people to go to their local woodlands and forests and take time to stop, listen and record the harmonies of nature, then upload these online. Hopefully it has shown the unifying power of nature, it has transported thousands of us to forests around the world. In a time where we are physically isolated the project has provided hope and connection.</i></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Forests are resilient, adaptive, multi-faceted and offer us real hope that we can find a way through this crisis.</i></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>We would never have anticipated how compelling and inspiring it would be to sit in our homes during these strange and uncertain times and to be transported, to a forest say, in Panama, Montreal or Hong Kong. It's been the most amazing thing, feeling so connected whilst so distanced.</i></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Timber Festival 2021 is planned to go ahead at the site in Feanedock, UK where participants will be camping, glamping, singing, dancing and even watching magic shows and comedy routines. </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ1eqn_h34UVM3pOQVZoYszJr5nMOCNNAnLHyO8HuKTpYeEY1njIFDxz10pV1HUyywFWoXCnInV0AWwdn1Qw-NvXeVqSZoZsisx8hdWJ2z_Vei7pqqz0PQTkH-8Z1w4qDmFnfR48MsZ2w/s570/Ascension+Dance.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="381" data-original-width="570" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ1eqn_h34UVM3pOQVZoYszJr5nMOCNNAnLHyO8HuKTpYeEY1njIFDxz10pV1HUyywFWoXCnInV0AWwdn1Qw-NvXeVqSZoZsisx8hdWJ2z_Vei7pqqz0PQTkH-8Z1w4qDmFnfR48MsZ2w/w400-h268/Ascension+Dance.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Ascension Dance</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzTEKfTXcXm_iScF4YIIdAmrW7Fl-jRQmabh7pJh-QnE0KyZbM32tV0UP4iMLK7EKrDfjUZ0VzyHMolkfjhpvtj29cG1wGPcg5Z4FHn5pyTRoZVCEIbZgCPfFsEnaQfkymfnkZuIMIUcc/s570/Horn+Dance.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="380" data-original-width="570" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzTEKfTXcXm_iScF4YIIdAmrW7Fl-jRQmabh7pJh-QnE0KyZbM32tV0UP4iMLK7EKrDfjUZ0VzyHMolkfjhpvtj29cG1wGPcg5Z4FHn5pyTRoZVCEIbZgCPfFsEnaQfkymfnkZuIMIUcc/w400-h266/Horn+Dance.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Horn Dance</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGhCAGCLMqv1ZPCNY6REXcM0O4kJ5k4ZG1BiG5ra4u29eNsvGOIivy-sGrK22a4KCbCzjARCiMLjN8glwkqbhWOt4B83TXXE-thHw99Z4qv1NCFIwCF5xVqR5JFMO5agLJM3bM8RGedio/s570/Maypole+Dancing.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="379" data-original-width="570" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGhCAGCLMqv1ZPCNY6REXcM0O4kJ5k4ZG1BiG5ra4u29eNsvGOIivy-sGrK22a4KCbCzjARCiMLjN8glwkqbhWOt4B83TXXE-thHw99Z4qv1NCFIwCF5xVqR5JFMO5agLJM3bM8RGedio/w400-h266/Maypole+Dancing.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Maypole Dancing</span></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Most of us will not be able to attend this awesome-looking event, July 2,3 and 4, 2021, so in the meantime, head over to <a href="https://timberfestival.org.uk/news/top-10-most-listened-to-forest-sounds-revealed/" target="_blank">Forest Sounds</a> to choose a forest or woodland to enjoy.
